陋室铭

山不在高，有仙则名。水不在深，有龙则灵。斯是陋室，惟吾德馨。苔痕上阶绿，草色入帘青。谈笑有鸿儒，往来无白丁。可以调素琴，阅金经。无丝竹之乱耳，无案牍之劳形。南阳诸葛庐，西蜀子云亭。孔子云：何陋之有？

创作背景
《陋室铭》作于和州任上（824—826年）。《历阳典录》：“陋室，在州治内，唐和州刺史刘禹锡建，有铭，柳公权书碑。”
作者刘禹锡在任监察御史期间，曾参加王叔文的“永贞革新”反对宦官和藩镇割据势力。革新失败后，被贬至安徽和州县当一名刺史。和州知县故意刁难他。半年时间，知县强迫作者搬了三次家，面积一次比一次小，最后仅是一床、一桌、一椅的斗室。作者愤然提笔写下这篇《陋室铭》，并请人刻上石碑，立在门前。

The mountain doesn’t have to be high. As long as there are immortals living, it will be famous; The water doesn’t have to be deep. As long as there are dragons hidden, there are supernatural forces. Although this is a humble hut, I have high moral character and good virtue.
The steps are covered with moss marks, and you can see the green of the house at a glance. All the people who talk and laugh here are knowledgeable people, and none of them is shallow and ignorant. We can play the guqin without color decoration and read the Buddhist scriptures. Here, no noisy music disturbs the ears, and no official documents make the body tired.
There are Zhuge Liang’s cottages in Nanyang and Yangxiong’s xuanting in Western Shu. As Confucius said, “how can such a place be called humble hut?”

山は高さを必要としないで、仙人の居住があるのでさえすれば盛名がある；水は深くなくても、龍が潜んでいる限り超自然の力がある。これは粗末な小屋だが、私は品格が高く、徳行が美しい。
石段に苔の跡がいっぱいついていて、ひと目で部屋中の緑が見える。ここにはたくさんの知識を学んでいる人が行き来している。浅薄で無知な人は一人もいない。饰らない古琴を弾くことができる。お経を読むことができる。ここでは、騒がしい音が耳を荒らすこともなく、官公庁の公文書も体を労することもない。
南陽には諸葛亮の庵があり、西蜀には揚雄の玄亭がある。孔子が言ったように、「こんなところはみすぼらしいとは言えない。」
